Message from
Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC Governor of New South Wales

As Patron, I am delighted to convey my personal best wishes to all Members and Supporters of Diabetes NSW & ACT.

This is a difficult time for everyone, as we each seek to manage the social, financial and emotional impact of the COVID-19 measures that are currently in place. For people living with diabetes, this is a more trying time than usual. Managing the daily routine of diabetes, observing your health advice and focusing on your well-being is thus especially important at this time of increased anxiety. With some brighter news of late, we may take some comfort knowing that the number of new cases diagnosed each day is decreasing.

It is also heart-warming to know that family, friends and members of the wider community are thinking of you, concerned for your health and general wellbeing. I spoke at length with Sturt Eastwood, the Chief Executive Officer of Diabetes NSW & ACT, recently and I am very proud of how his team has adapted to the changing environment. Restrictions on bringing people together has meant so many education events have had to be cancelled. However, his team is working hard to ensure they can continue to support you with your diabetes self-management needs, albeit in new and different ways.

Despite the challenges we are experiencing, I am confident we will soon be able to look back on this period as a time when we, as a community, came together to protect lives and to look out for the health and well-being of each other.

Stay well.

Warmest best wishes,

Her excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC
Governor of New South Wales

From humble beginnings, Diabetes NSW & ACT has grown to become Australia’s oldest and largest member based diabetes charity. This year we are proud to mark 80 years of supporting people living with or at risk of diabetes, their families and carers across NSW and the ACT.

The Diabetic Association of Australia (as we were first known) was founded in 1938 by Sir Kempson Maddox. The aim was to provide benefit and service and be a powerful voice for those living with diabetes. We have remained true to this vision and today continue to provide educational programs, advocacy services and fund vital research into better treatments so those in the diabetes community can live their best lives. In 2018 we have over 47,000 members who are at the core of everything we do.

Diabetes NSW & ACT continues to remember Sir Kempson Maddox through our annual Sir Kempson Maddox Award that is presented to a person who has made a significant contribution to the diabetes movement and helping to improve the lives of people living with diabetes.

On our 80th birthday we would like to thank all our members, donors and supporters – without you we would not be able to do the work we do today.
